Recognition Month for IUSD's
Allied Dental Professionals
Do you own any books that engrossed you when you read them, but you know in
your heart you'll never have the time to read them again? Did that last CD you
opened your wallet for turn out to be not quite as well-suited to your taste as
you had hoped? Are there a few movie videos in the back of your bookshelves that
haven't been trotted out to the family room in years?
If you've got books and other items that are more successful at attracting
dust bunnies than human beings these days, then you're the perfect person to
answer the call from the INDIANA UNIVERSITY LIBRARIANS ASSOCIATION â€" IUPUI,
which is collecting donations this month for a BOOK SALE to be held in April.
IUSD librarian Jan Cox is helping coordinate the book sale, and she
will be happy to accept your donations in her office through Friday, March 28.
Proceeds from the sale will help provide scholarships in the field of library
and information science, as well as grants for research and professional
development.
Almost any item in decent shape is welcome, including journals and magazines,
posters, and audiocassettes. Outdated textbooks and National Geographic
magazines are not sought after, however, since they have not been brisk sellers
in the past.
Sometimes it's hard to part with these types of belongings. While getting my
donations ready, I moved one particular book in and out of the book-sale pile
about 12 times before finally forcing myself to let it go. If you've been
inspired by a written, audio, or visual work of art you own but you don't plan
to revisit it anytime soon, the best thing you can do is to pass it along,
increasing the chances that someone else's eyes will be opened to the beauty of
that work â€" and, better still, for a fraction of the original price. Please
support the book sale if you can.

NATIONAL DENTAL BOARD EXAMINATION
People, Places, and Things
IUSD KIDS CLUB VISITS COMMUNITY YOUNGSTERS. According to Dr. Joan Kowolik,
assistant professor of pediatric dentistry, IU's student unit of the American
Society of Dentistry for Children (ASDC) has been transformed into the "IUSD
Kids Club," a group that welcomes into its membership any dental, dental
hygiene, and dental assisting student with an interest in learning more about
treating children.
A pediatric specialty program doesn't need to lie in your future in order for
you to reap the benefits of this organization. "More than 80 percent of child
patients are treated by general or family dentists," says Dr. Kowolik, who
serves as the club's adviser. The national ASDC itself is composed of general
practitioners in addition to pediatric dentists and others interested in the
oral healthcare of children.
On the morning of Feb. 20, 11 members of the IUSD Kids Club connected with
more than 200 children at Crooked Creek Elementary School. Targeting an audience
of kindergarteners through second graders, the dental students touched upon such
topics as oral hygiene, good foods and bad foods, what makes a cavity form, and
how often kids should see the dentist.
"The school was delighted with the visit and has asked the students to return
some other time," says Dr. Kowolik.
Participants included Carolyn Demas, Jason Flannagan, Mandy
Greenlee, Sarah Herd, Carrie Klene, Heather Maupin, Daniel Millikan, Teresa
Nicholson, and Katie Rusnak, all third-year students; Adrienne
Hedrick, lst year; and Sean Cook, 4th year.
Sean returned to the school later in the day to talk to the school's afternoon
kindergarten class.
Students of dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental assisting who would like to
know more about joining the IUSD Kids Club should contact Heather Maupin (hmaupin@iupui.edu)
or Dr. Kowolik (jkowolik@iupui.edu).
