67 Scholarships Bestowed at 9th Annual Gathering of Award
Recipients, Donors
Indiana University students of dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental
assisting receiving scholarships in 2007 were recently given an opportunity to
meet some of the many generous people who made these awards possible.
The dental school’s annual Scholarship Luncheon, held in November at
University Place Hotel on the IUPUI campus, brought students together with
donors and other friends of the school who have created scholarships at IUSD and
supported the school’s scholarship program.
Many of the scholarships are named for IUSD graduates or graduates’ family
members, and some – such as the Milo Smith (DDS 1896) Memorial award honoring a
Winchester, Ind., dentist – have been in existence for decades. One of the
newest awards, the Sylvia Levinson Memorial Scholarship, was created in 2006 by
Mrs. Levinson’s son, Steven Levinson of Studio City, Calif. The Sylvia Levinson
award is the second to be established by Mr. Levinson, who together with his
uncle, Irving Newmark (DDS’45), Encino, Calif., established the Harvey G.
Levinson Memorial Scholarship in 1987, in honor of Steven’s brother, a 1960 IU
dental graduate who died in 1986.
