68th Alumni Conference Draws Hundreds of Grads to Campus
Three Indiana dentists and an Indiana Dental Association administrator were honored and a beloved board member was remembered during the 68th Fall Dental Alumni Conference of the IUSD Alumni Association, held on the IUPUI campus September 24-25.
Hundreds of participants gathered in Indianapolis for the IU dental school’s annual reunion, this year recognizing dental and dental hygiene classes from years ending with “0” and “5.”
The association’s board of directors welcomed new president Dr. Kenneth Hyde, a Valparaiso, Ind., orthodontist and longtime contributor to the board. The board’s officers asked Dr. Hyde to serve the president’s term that was to have been Dr. Kenneth Braun’s. Dr. Braun of Rockport, Ind., succumbed to an illness this past summer while serving as president-elect. A tribute to Dr. Braun, who received a Distinguished Alumnus award in May, included remarks by his brother, Dr. Arnold Braun, also of Rockport.
Dr. Hyde holds three degrees from IU, including a bachelor’s in zoology from the IU Bloomington campus (1972) and dental and graduate orthodontic degrees from the IU School of Dentistry (1975 and 1979, respectively). Practicing primarily in Valparaiso since 1977, Dr. Hyde has also held an appointment on the IU dental faculty since 2008 as a volunteer clinical assistant professor of orthodontics.
He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a past president of the Indiana Association of Orthodontists.
Dr. Hyde has been involved with the IUSD Alumni Association for decades and is best known among the alumni as the talented bicyclist who leads reunion participants on bicycle tours at the fall conference each year (originally around the IU Bloomington campus and more recently around Eagle Creek park in Indianapolis). He has been a licensed amateur bicycle racer since 1980.
Dr. Hyde and his wife, Kathy, have two married daughters and twin grandsons one-and-a-half years old.
Below are the 2010 Fall Dental Alumni Conference award recipients followed by a list of the IUSD Alumni Association board members for 2010-2011.
Kenneth E. Braun, DDS’84
(award bestowed in May 2010)
When Dr. Kenneth Braun attended the IU School of Dentistry’s commencement last May to join his family in welcoming niece Amanda Braun (DDS’10) into the dental profession, he didn’t expect to become a part of the ceremony himself.
In a pre-planned surprise, IUSD Alumni Association President Phillip Conn (DDS’78), Danville, Ill., stepped to the podium to bestow a Distinguished Alumnus Award on the Rockport, Ind., dentist. While visiting with family and friends afterward, including his wife, Carol Jean Braun (DDS’84, Cert’86 Pediatric Dentistry), Ken expressed his deep gratitude with the humility he was well known for.
Dr. Braun’s death only seven weeks later was an enormous blow to everyone who knew and loved him, and to all of us who had looked forward to his assuming the presidency of the IU School of Dentistry Alumni Association this September after nearly a decade of outstanding service in other board positions.
The IUSDAA shared this gentleman with many other organizations. He held a term as president of the First District Dental Society and served on its executive council, attained Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry, and presided over the Spencer County Sheriff’s Department Merit Board among other community leadership roles. He participated in a dental mission to the Dominican Republic through the Timmy Foundation in 2005.
James M. Lipton, DDS’82
Dr. James Lipton’s pioneering efforts over the past generation have been in the area of patient care for Hoosiers who have great difficulty maintaining their oral health because of medical challenges, severe disabilities, or a debilitating fear of seeking dental treatment. The Highland, Ind., practitioner started an interdisciplinary hospital dental program in Indiana for medically compromised and severely handicapped patients. He has been working with hospitalized patients in multiple facilities throughout Northwest Indiana since the mid-1980s.
Appointed as an adjunct instructor at IUSD in 2009, Dr. Lipton has teamed up with a group of his northern Indiana colleagues to offer fourth-year dental students a multidisciplinary treatment planning workshop through the extramural program.
Leonard F. Anglis, DDS
Crown Point, Ind.
Although he graduated from Loyola University Chicago’s dental school, not IU’s, Dr. Leonard Anglis is a steadfast member of Indiana’s practicing community, having devoted nearly three decades to his patients in Lowell. He also sees patients in Crown Point and Michigan City.
With more than 2,000 continuing education hours registered with the Academy of General Dentistry, Dr. Anglis has attained the academy’s highest level of achievement through its Mastership program. He is certified by the American Board of General Dentistry and the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry. He was an examiner for the American Board of General Dentistry from 2001 to 2007 and also served a term as the board’s president.
Philip W. Gardner, DDS’78
Fort Wayne dentist Dr. Phil Gardner is cited in part for his work with the IUSD Alumni Association. He served the board of directors with excellence from 1999 to 2007, including a year as president in 2005-2006.
Dr. Gardner has supported organized dentistry and the community of Fort Wayne with the same dedication that he has shown the Alumni Association. He is a past chair of the Isaac Knapp District Dental Society’s Peer Review Committee. He began practicing in Fort Wayne soon after graduating from IUSD in 1978, the same year he accepted a decades-long role on the board of directors for Dukes Day, a charitable scholarship program for students pursuing health-related majors.
CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION
G. Edward Popcheff, BS
As the Indiana Dental Association’s director of governmental affairs, Ed Popcheff has been the voice of advocacy for Hoosier dentists for 15 years.
He secured a 119% increase in Indiana Medicaid dental reimbursement rates in the Indiana General Assembly, obtained state funding for the Indiana Donated Dental Services program, and tripled the dollars for political action committee fundraising. He has drafted legislation for policy issues of importance to the dental community and has testified before the Indiana General Assembly on such topics as Medicaid funding and small business issues.
Popcheff works with IU’s dental students through multiple initiatives to give them a sense of what advocacy means to them and to their future in dentistry.
