Margherita Fontana, DDS, PhD, holds the position of Associate Professor
(tenured) in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry at Indiana University School of Dentistry. She serves as Director of the
Microbial Caries Model Facility, which is part of the Oral Health Research Institute; she is director of the new
Oral
Biofilms in Caries Assessment and Management Research Program within her Department, and is also Director of
Predoctoral Education for her Department. After receiving her dental degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela
(UCV), Caracas, Venezuela, in 1990, Dr. Fontana worked as a Research Assistant in the Dental Research Institute, Dental School, UCV for two years, while she also worked in private practice. She then moved to the United States to pursue her research interests, and in 1996 completed a four-year PhD program in Dental Sciences at Indiana University, Indianapolis, IN. As a principal investigator, she has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health,
the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry, the Delta Dental Fund, and private industry. Dr. Fontana has lectured as an invited speaker in different countries being recognized for her work in the field of
Cariology, and is currently teaching several lectures related to Cariology in the DDS and Dental Hygiene Programs and in several Master and PhD Graduate
Programs. She has also been an active participant in the Problem Based Learning aspects of the Curriculum. She
was the first president for the Indiana Chapter of the Hispanic Dental Association, and has been a member for many years of the International Association for Dental Research, the European Organization for Caries Research
(ORCA), and the American Society for Microbiology. |

Carlos González-Cabezas, DDS, PhD, holds the position of Associate
Professor (tenured) in the Department of Preventive and Community
Dentistry at Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD). He serves as
Director of the Preventive Dentistry
MDS/MS Programs. Dr. González-Cabezas also directs the Digital
Electron Microscopy Facility of IUSD; and the
Secondary
Caries Research Program within his department. After receiving his
dental degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), Caracas,
Venezuela, in 1991, Dr. González-Cabezas worked as a Research
Collaborator for the Dental Research Institute of his Alma Mater (UCV) for
two years, while simultaneously working in private practice. In 1992, he
entered the PhD program in Dental Sciences at Indiana University. In 1995,
he accepted the position of Director of the Confocal and Scanning Electron
Microscopy Facility. In 1996, he accepted a position as Visiting Assistant
Professor at IUSD. In 1997, he obtained his PhD degree in Dental Sciences
at Indiana University. In 1998, he accepted a tenure-tract position as
Assistant Professor at IUSD. Between 1999 and 2001, he served as
Vice-President and President of the Indiana Section of the American
Association for Dental Research. In 2002, he obtained a 2-year
certificate in graduate operative dentistry. Between 2002 and 2003 as Program
Chair for Cariology Group of the 2003 annual AADR meeting. In 2004,
he obtained a D.D.S. degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry,
became licensed in the state of Indiana, and was promoted to Associate
Professor with tenure.

Richard Gregory, Ph.D., holds a primary position of Professor in the
Department of Oral Biology at Indiana University School of Dentistry.
He serves as the Director of the Ph.D. Dental Science and Student Research
Programs. After receiving his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Southern
Illinois University he completed a three year postdoctoral residency at
the University of Alabama at Birmingham and taught Immunology at the
University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. In 1984 he relocated to a
faculty position at Emory University School of Dentistry and in 1991 moved
to Indiana University. He has been the recipient of numerous
research grants from federal and private sources totaling over $3.5
million. Dr. Gregory has published over 75 research papers and
almost 200 abstracts. He has conducted immunological and
microbiological research in the area of oral biofilms for more than 25
years. He has been an invited speaker in nine different countries.
He has mentored 13 Masters, 8 Ph.D. and 8 postdoctoral students. He
was awarded the Indiana University School of Dentistry Alumna Association
Distinguished Faculty Award for Research in 1994. He teaches
immunology and microbiology to both undergraduate and graduate dental and
medical students and is course or module director of nine courses.
Dr. Gregory has participated in the school's Problem Based Learning
program since its' inception and has written many PBL cases. He has
received numerous Indiana University Teaching Excellence Recognition and
Trustees Teaching Awards. He has served as the President of the
Indiana Section of the American Association for Dental Research and the
Indiana Branch of the American Society for Microbiology. Dr. Gregory
serves on the editorial boards of Clinical and Diagnostic Laboratory
Immunology and the Journal of Dental Research as well as an ad hoc
reviewer of several other prestigious journals. He regularly serves
as a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, National
Science Foundation and the Department of Education. He was the
recipient of the Indiana University School of Dentistry Outstanding
Faculty Member of the Year in 2003.
