Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentistry Patient Care
The Department of Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentistry provides comprehensive dental care. The following is a partial list of conditions treated by the department.
Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
- Tooth extractions including wisdom teeth
- Dental implants
- Dentoalveolar reconstruction (including bone grafts for dental implants)
- Corrective jaw surgery / Orthognathic surgery
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Facial trauma
- Oral pathology / tumors
- Jaw reconstruction
- Temporomandibular surgery
- Sedation and general anesthesia for procedures
Division of Hospital Dentistry
- Tooth restoration (removal of decay/cavities and placement of filling)
- Crowns (including placement of crowns on implants)
- Dentures and partial dentures (including implant retained dentures)
- Root canal therapy (endodontics)
- Periodontal treatment
- Management of dental care for medically compromised patients
- Management of dental care for patients who have received head and neck radiation

As the only oral and maxillofacial surgery training program in the state the department is referred many complex patients to be managed in these nationally recognized hospitals. As the only two Level 1 trauma facilities in the state, Methodist Hospital and Wishard Hospital, receive many transfers with significant maxillofacial injuries / infections for acute patient care, which are directed to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service.
