Laboratory Testing Facility

The Oral Health Research Institute is a major site for contract testing of dental products required by the FDA and for product approval by the American Dental Association (ADA). The OHRI conducts contract studies to test the efficacy of oral care products using specialized equipment as well as a variety of experimental models, such as:

Fluoride bioavailability tests (ADA acceptance)
Toothpaste fluoride stability (FDA and ADA)
Enamel fluoride uptake (FDA and ADA tests)
Enamel solubility (FDA test)
In vitro enamel demineralization, remineralization and pH cycling studies
Enamel cleaning (stain removal) and polishing with dentifrice and prophylaxis pastes
Abrasion of enamel (REA) and dentin (RDA) with dentifrice and prophylaxis pastes
Abrasion and cleaning studies of manual and power toothbrushes
Toothbrush bristle stiffness (ISO method)

Contract studies have also included the investigation of the anti-caries and anti-erosion efficacy of oral care products using in situ experimental models. All the contract studies are conducted under GLP.

The Contract Testing Facility utilizes five technical units:
