Accomplishments

Since its inception in March 2003, Seal Indiana has . . .
  • Traveled to all regions of Indiana, visiting over 800 Title I schools, community health centers, Head Start programs and shelters for the homeless and victims of domestic violence.
Currently, SEAL INDIANA is primarily using portable dental units in schools in an effort to refine a delivery system that can be replicated by other agencies serving the oral health needs of low-income children. The 40’ Sealmobile, with two dental operatories and a wheelchair lift, is used for selected programs or when there is no space inside for a temporary clinic.

  • Examined more than 16,000 low-income Indiana children, over half of whom had untreated dental disease. Each child receives a toothbrush and brushing instructions, along with the other services, and takes home a dental report, informing parents what treatment was provided and what follow-up is needed.

  • Placed over 22,000 dental sealants on back teeth
and provided over 11,000 fluoride varnish treatments.

In a typical day, the SEAL INDIANA team of IUSD faculty, staff and 4th-year dental students serves an average of 20 to 25 children who are the least likely to receive care.

  • Served such community outreach programs as Special Olympics, 500 Festival Kids Fest, Mayor’s Latino Fest and IU Day at the State Fair.
