Associate Professor
Director, MSD/MS Preventive Dentistry

Andréa G. Ferreira Zandoná, DDS, MSD, PhD is a tenured Associate Professor of the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry at Indiana University School of Dentistry. Dr. Zandoná is originally from Curitiba, Brazil where she received her dental degree from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná. After receiving her dental degree in 1990 she was a visiting scholar at College of Dentistry, University of Illinois at Chicago in the Department of Operative Dentistry. Dr. Zandoná affiliation with Indiana University School of Dentistry began in 1991 when she was accepted in the Graduate Operative Dentistry program which led to her MSD in 1994. She later (1997) completed a PhD program in Dental Sciences at Indiana University with a dissertation on "Detection of Demineralization on Occlusal Pit and Fissures". She then joined the university as Visiting Assistant Scientist and in 1998, accepted a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor at IUSD. She took a leave of absence then and returned to Brazil where she joined the faculty of Braz Cubas University School of Dentistry in Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo (1998-1999), and then Tuiuti University School of Dentistry in Curitiba, Paraná (1999-2001) while she also worked in private practice. In January 2001 she returned to Indiana and resumed her activities at IUSD. Dr. Zandoná has lectured as an invited speaker throughout the country and abroad, and is involved in teaching both at the graduate and undergraduate level and is the coordinator for the Caries Risk Management Competency. She has been an active participant in the Problem Based Learning aspects of the Curriculum. She is also involved in service-learning with an exchange program for students from IU and a Brazilian Dental School. She is the Director of the Early Caries Detection and Management Research Program. She has been involved in many aspects of clinical research focusing on early caries diagnosis and has received research grants as principal investigator from the National Institutes of Health, the Delta Dental Fund and private industry. She is a core member of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System Committee. She has been a member for many years of the International Association for Dental Research, and the European Organization for Caries Research (ORCA), and the Academy of Operative Dentistry. Education

Dr. Zandoná is greatly involved and interested in the teaching of cariology, specially caries detection methods to pre-doctoral and graduate students. She holds several labs with hands on opportunities for students to experience firsthand new technologies for caries detection. Additionally, she regularly mentors students conducting research projects in cariology. Dr. Zandoná is also interested in developing and integrating new teaching methods to improve the education of dental students, having developed computer aided learning tools that have been integrated to her labs.

Research

Dr. Zandoná research interests are mainly in the early detection of caries and their management, a research program under her direction. She is the PI of an NIH funded RO1 clinical study aiming at validation of the use of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System in combination with Quantitative Light Induced Fluorescence for early caries detection. She is also involved in several other projects on secondary caries, health literacy, risk assessment and histological validation using methodologies such as microcomputer tomography.

Service

Dr. Zandoná has been a mentor and health care provider in service-learning projects since 2006. She has an agreement with an University in Brazil where IUSD students work in collaboration with local students in impoverished areas and in turn dental students from Brazil visit IUSD and conduct a research in her laboratory. Along with teams of faculty members and students she actively seeks donations and major gifts for her service-learning projects.
