Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) currently utilizes problem-based learning
(PBL) within its predoctoral curriculum. An integral part of PBL is critical self-assessment:
to facilitate this assessment process by both students and tutors, a unique Web-based
system has been implemented to allow for the electronic capture of narrative assessment
information. The system has also been designed for the analysis and manipulation
of said information, allowing for on-screen display and electronic distribution
to both students and instructors.
Developed with Allaire ColdFusion, and powered by Microsoft SQL Server and Internet
Information Server, user-specific information can be both entered and retrieved
from the system. The interface is a familiar, "Windows"-style menu system that is
customized based on the users secure login. Additionally, the system is administered
through a "PBL Management" component, where authorized users (i.e., the IUSD Office
of Dental Education) can set specific parameters for the functioning of the system
(e.g., test dates, customization of data-gathering forms, generation of specific
data reports, etc.).
Although PBL curriculum is utilized in a few select institutions of higher learning
in the United States, the IUSD PBL Online Assessment System is unique in its ability
to electronically capture, manipulate and distribute PBL information, as well as
help to facilitate the entire PBL process.
The system is both a novel method of utilizing technology to enhance curriculum,
and also a reflection of the growing need to integrate educational processes with
electronic media. An on-line "tour" of the system is currently available from the
IUSD Web site. This allows interested parties from outside Indiana University
to explore the system, and the benefits it brings to a PBL-based curriculum.
