Office of Student Financial Aid Services

Welcome to the IUSD Office of Student Financial Aid Services homepage. This information is designed to provide specific financial aid information for students enrolled in the IU School of Dentistry Doctor of Dental Surgery program.

For students enrolled in the Allied Dental Programs, please visit the Office of Student Financial Aid Services for additional information. The IUPUI Office of Student Financial Aid Services provides counseling and completes financial aid awards for these undergraduate programs.

Overview of the Financial Aid Process

The first step in applying for financial aid for dental school is to complete the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) application on the Web for the appropriate aid year.  For any new first year student (DS1), you will be filling out the current 2008-09 FAFSA AND you should also fill out the 2009-10 FAFSA in order to receive financial aid on the first day of classes.  Because the school year starts in July, this is the last six week period of the IUPUI 2009 summer term which is considered the end of the 2008-2009 academic year.  Therefore, if a student needs financial aid in July, he/she must complete (or revise) the 2008-09 FAFSA application.  The school code is 001813 and the applicant should be sure to indicate that he/she is a "Grad/Prof Student" and a "First Year GP" on both FAFSA applications.

Once the FAFSA has been submitted and received by IUPUI, the annual process of confirming eligibility and awarding financial aid begins in April for new students and late May for continuing students.  Students should monitor their IUPUI email account and check their OneStart (student records system) accounts regularly to make sure that there are no missing documents and to make sure that they complete any additional financial aid processing steps online such as submitting the Master Promissory Note (MPN) for federal student loans.

Approximately ten (10) days before a term (i.e., Summer, Fall, Spring) begins, financial aid will be automatically credited to the student's IUPUI Bursar (billing) account.  Students who have received aid in excess of their bill will be refunded the credit balance either by paper check or Direct Deposit if the student has signed up for this service.

Sources of Aid for Dental Students

The primary financial aid sources for most health profession students are federal student loans.  IUPUI participates in the Federal Direct Loan (DL) Program to deliver federal loan funds to its' student population.  Please review the Federal Stafford and Graduate PLUS loan programs in more detail so that you better understand the terms and repayment conditions for these federal loans.

Private student loans are another resource utilized by students if/when federal loan funding is not enough to cover the student's educational expenses.  The IUPUI Office of Financial Aid Services provides various private loan programs that it recommends students to consider using if needed.  Please review the private loan link for additional information and guidance.

Gift aid such as external or institutional scholarships and grants have historically been directed toward undergraduate students so a dental student should not expect to receive any or little "free" assistance when attending dental school.  IUSD offers a small number of scholarships that are awarded in the fall semester of each year.  Students are encouraged to apply in the fall term through the Office of Student Affairs for this money.  The internet also offers a number of free scholarship search engines that a student may wish to utilize in looking for external scholarships such as FASTWEB.com, FASTAID.com or Scholarships.com.

There are also service-based scholarships available to dental students.  These scholarships will pay for the total tuition/fees and provide a monthly stipend for each year that the student receives the scholarship.  After graduation, the dentist provides general dentistry services to members of the military (Army, Navy, Air Force) or in underserved areas of the U.S. or U.S. Territories (NHSC and IHS):

Army HPSP
Navy HPSP
Air Force HPSP
National Health Services Corps (NHSC) Program
Indian Health Service (HIS) Program
