Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) offers an Advanced Standing
Program (ASP) for selected individuals who have received their dental degree
from an institution outside the U.S. or Canada. Admission to the ASP is
dependent upon IUSD's available resources, and therefore is highly restrictive
and generally limited to one candidate per year. Due to a current lack
of available resources, IUSD is not accepting applications for the 2008
application cycle.
When considering candidates for the ASP, the Admissions Committee will
interview and give preference to the following:
- Current IUSD faculty
- Current students in or recent graduates from IUSD advanced education
programs
- Faculty from other institutions who express interest in faculty openings at
IUSD
- Other residents of the State of Indiana.
The following criteria will be used in the selection process, and the
Admissions Committee will consider only those candidates for whom all the
information is available:
- Successful completion of Part I and Part II of the National Board Dental Examination
- Comments from an interview with members of the Admissions Committee
- Evaluation of dental transcripts
- Two letters of recommendation (one personal and one professional)
- TOEFL test of English language proficiency as required by Indiana University
for applicants whose first language is not English
An individualized curriculum is designed for each candidate who is admitted
to the ASP based up on an assessment of his/her previous education, training,
experience and demonstrated competencies. This assessment may include the
following:
- Written and practical examinations
- Examples of technique work
- Other information considered by the Admissions Committee to be useful in its
deliberations
The individualized program will range from one to three years in length.
Upon successful completion of the ASP, the candidate will receive the degree
Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Indiana University School of
Dentistry.
Financing should be carefully planned for those interested in applying to the
ASP, as IUSD has no stipends, grants or scholarships upon which international
students in the ASP can depend. If you have any questions please call 317
274-8173 or email rkasberg@iupui.edu
Expedited Option of the ASP: Clinically well qualified full-time
faculty can opt to participate in the expedited Program that is based on the
IUSD DDS Institutional Competencies. However, to do this, the candidate
must be sponsored by a full-time faculty member within their department.
This sponsoring faculty will be responsible to serve as the candidate's
advocate, facilitator, and mentor in the successful completion of the program.
Expedited Program Description: The IUSD Advanced Standing Doctor
of Dental Surgery Expedited Program utilizes the Clinical Competencies Manual of
the Indiana University School of Dentistry as found on the dental school's
intranet. These competencies are based on our institutional competency
statements and existing clinical competencies in the doctoral program. The
clinical competencies are the measurement criteria used to access the desired
outcomes for the IUSD Standards of Care, and the IUSD Quality Assurance Program.
It is assumed that the candidate desiring participation in this program comes
with the necessary didactic and clinical pre-requisites for participation in the
competency examinations. The competency examinations will be utilized to
assess that minimum skill level necessary to progress through this program.
If the candidate can demonstrate competence in the nine competency areas:
(Caries Management, Periodontics, Operative, Pediatric Dentistry, Endodontics,
Complete Denture, Oral Surgery, Fixed Prosthodontics, and Removable Partial
Prosthodontics), the Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree will then be granted.
Demonstration of competence in an area in which the candidate has recognized
expertise and training could be waived by the particular section/department's
faculty.
It is anticipated that these activities could be accomplished in less than 12
months, although some individuals may find that they need more time. The
authority over the Advanced Standing Program is the Indiana University School of
Dentistry Faculty Council. The Advanced Standing Program is administered
by the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.
These policies and procedures are modeled after the ASP IUSD Philosophy and
Guidelines drafted March 26, 2001 by Dean Lawrence Goldblatt, particularly as
they relate to "the rapid worsening national shortage of qualified and willing
dental faculty".
