Dr. Jeffrey A. Platt
Division Director |
Welcome to the web site for the Division of Dental
Biomaterials at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. The study of Dental
Biomaterials involves any material used in the diagnosis, prevention or
treatment of oral diseases. The Division has been among the international
leaders in this area for over 50 years. Currently, our primary areas of research
lie broadly within the topics of polymer applications, polymer-cellular
interactions and corrosion as well as ceramic mechanics and fabrication
techniques. Our faculty and staff are actively involved with collaborative
investigations with researchers in biomedical engineering, mechanical
engineering, operative dentistry, prosthodontics, endodontics, oral biology, and
preventive dentistry.
Although individual intellectual investigation is an
important pursuit, the development of students into top researchers, teachers
and clinicians is our priority. Our educational objectives include:
- to provide an understanding of how basic
physical and mechanical properties influence the performance of Dental
Biomaterials;
- to provide every student with a basic
understanding to the composition and structure of the materials used in
dentistry;
- to communicate the relevance of
biocompatibility;
- to create an environment in which students
can gain confidence as researchers.
