Associate Professor

Richard Jackson, DMD holds the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry at Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD). Dr. Jackson received his dental degree from the University of Louisville in 1979 and his certification as a Pediatric Dentist through the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1981. After certification, Dr Jackson joined the faculty of the Indiana University School of Dentistry as a Research Associate. In 2000, he became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2006.

Education

Dr. Jackson is involved in the teaching of cariology to pre-doctoral and graduate students and is a regular facilitator for the Problem-based Learning curriculum for first and second-year pre-doctoral students. Additionally, he regularly mentors students conducting research projects in cariology. Dr. Jackson is also interested in developing and integrating new teaching methods to improve the education of dental students. In the future, he would like to facilitate the development of learning modules in oral health directed to the needs of nursing and medical students.
 
Research

Dr. Jackson’s research interests are mostly related to increasing our understanding of dental caries and their clinical management. He is regularly engaged in numerous research projects; many of them in collaboration with other institutions from all over the world. Dr. Jackson also has particular interest in the impact of health literacy on oral health,the dental needs of the medically compromised and oral health products in general (e.g., dentifrices, rinses, toothbrushes, etc.)
