Margot L. Van Dis was born & raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1975 with a BS degree in zoology, and she received her DDS degree in 1980 from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.  She earned her MS degree in Dental Diagnostic Sciences in 1985 at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.  She is board certified in both oral medicine & Oral & Maxillofacial radiology.  Dr. Van Dis served as assistant professor in the Department of Diagnostic Services at the Ohio State University College of Dentistry from 1985 to 1990, & moved to Indianapolis in 1990 as associate professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at Indiana University School of Dentistry.  She was promoted to full professor & tenured in 1996.  She was appointed Associate Dean for Student Affairs in 1997 and served in that capacity until 2005.  Dr. Van Dis is the Director of the Cone Beam Imaging Facility here at IU School of Dentistry.  She belongs to the American Dental Education Association, American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology, American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology, American Board of Oral Medicine, & Omicron Kappa Upsilon.  Dr. Van Dis was the first woman to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology, serving from 1993 to 1997, & she was President of that organization in 1996-1997.  She currently serves as a consultant for the ADA National Board Dental Examination and is a frequent reviewer for the Journal of Dental Education, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology & Endodontics, and Dentomaxillofacial Radiology.  She has co-authored three textbooks in dental radiology:  Radiographic Imaging for Dental Auxiliaries, which has been released in its fourth edition as Radiographic Imaging for the Dental Team, Basic Principles of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology, & Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology: Radiologic/Pathologic Correlations.
