S. Miles Standish, DDS, MS
Professor Emeritus

Sadly, Professor Emeritus S. Miles Standish passed away on September 21st, 2003.  We have elected to leave his biographical sketch intact on our web page in his honor & his memory.

Dr. Standish received his DDS from Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1945 & followed that by completing his MS in Oral Pathology in 1956, also at IUSD.  He first served on the IUSD faculty in 1947 as an Instructor in Oral Diagnosis & Periodontics.  He received a full-time faculty appointment in 1958 &, at the time of his retirement in 1988, was the Chair of the Section of Oral Diagnosis/Oral Medicine in the Department of Dental Diagnostic Sciences, as well as the Associate Dean for Graduate & Postgraduate Education.  During his tenure, Dr. Standish received numerous special honors including nomination to Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Xi Psi Phi (Scholastic Key 1945), & Society of Sigma Xi.  He has been listed in American Men of Science (1961), Who's Who in American Dentistry (1963, 1971), Who's Who in the United States (1975), Who's Who in the Midwest (1976), & Who's Who in America (1977-present).  In addition, he was appointed Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of the Indiana State Police (1978), granted the Glen J. Irwin, Jr., MD Experience Excellence Recognition Award (1988), the Odontology Section Award by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (1991), & was named the Indianapolis District Dental Society's Honor Dentist in 1995.  He was a recipient of the 1999 IUSD Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Award.  Dr. Standish is an Emertius Fellow, American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology; Fellow, American Academy of Forensic Sciences; & Diplomate of the respective American Boards of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral Medicine, & Forensic Odontology.  He was also a charter member of the Organization of Teachers of Oral Diagnosis, the American Society of Forensic Odontology, & The Indiana Society of Forensic Odontology.  He is a member of the American Dental Association & Components, & the International Association for Dental Research (Life, 1988).   He has authored or co-authored 9 textbooks, 7 textbook chapters,  over 70 papers published in various dental & medical journals &, most recently,  an historical perspective of the Indianapolis District Dental Society in two volumes.   Additionally he has made approximately 200 presentations at various local, state & national meetings.  In addition, he served on the Boards of the Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants & the Indiana Medical History Museum.
