Dr.
Hartsfield received his D.M.D. from the Medical University
of South Carolina. Following a medical genetics fellowship
resulting in a M.S. degree from Indiana University, Dr.
Hartsfield studied orthodontics for three years at Harvard
University. During this time he began research in the causes
of oral and facial defects as a research fellow in
pediatrics at the Massachusetts General Hospital, receiving
from Harvard his certificate in orthodontics and a Master of
Medical Science degree.
Following a postdoctoral fellowship in medical
genetics at the University of South Florida (U.S.F.) College
of Medicine in Tampa, Dr. Hartsfield became an Assistant
Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at U.S.F. There he
received a Physician Scientist Award from the National
Institutes of Health, which supported his continued studies
into the causes of birth defects leading to a Ph.D. degree
from the U.S.F. College of Medicine.
Dr. Hartsfield is a Founding Fellow in the American College of Medical Genetics and a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and a Fellow in the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Hartsfield is a Fellow in the American College of Dentists,
and the
International College of Dentists. He was elected Vice President of the International Association for Dental Research Craniofacial Biology Group in 2003, serving as the group President-Elect and Group Program Chairman for 2004-2005, and President for 2005-2006. Dr. Hartsfield is
the Vice-President of the Harvard Society for the
Advancement of Orthodontics. He is a member of the Board of
Directors for the Conferences on Orthodontic Advances in
Science and Technology.
Dr. Hartsfield is Professor and Director of Oral Facial Genetics, and Professor of Orthodontics, in the Indiana University School of Dentistry; and Professor of Medical and Molecular Genetics in the School of Medicine. He is the Director of the Indiana University School of Dentistry Division of Orthodontics Histology and Mineralized Tissue Laboratory, and the Division of Oral Facial Genetics Molecular Genetics Laboratory. Dr. Hartsfield served as chairman of the Indiana University School of Dentistry Department of Oral Facial Development, which consists of the Divisions of Oral Facial Genetics, Orthodontics, and Pediatric Dentistry, from 1998 -2002. Although Dr. Hartsfield continues his interest in how specific genetic conditions or syndromes affect the mouth, face, and cranium; his main focus now is the study of the interaction of genetic and environmental factors that influence non-syndromic craniofacial growth and development, and the response to orthodontic treatment. For example, Dr. Hartsfield received the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation 2001 B.F. Dewell Memorial Biomedical Research Award, and was the research mentor of a Ph.D./Orthodontic student who received the 2002 Henry Sicher First Research Essay Award from the American Association of Orthodontists for the study of a genetic factor that influences the risk of external apical root resorption during orthodontic treatment;
and, who received the 2007 Beni Solow Award for the most
outstanding paper published during 2006 in the European
Journal of Orthodontics.
