| The Department of Oral Biology is
responsible for five of the major courses offered to dental students
during years one and two of the curriculum. Listed below are the
courses offered and a short description of each. For information

Critical Thinking and Professional Behavior:
An Introduction -
This course is designed to introduce the entering
freshmen to the profession of dentistry and provides functional experience
in problem-based learning. Various aspects of the history and ethics
of dentistry are discussed. Students are taught how to access the
printed and computer-oriented scientific literature. Additionally,
stress management and coping mechanisms for dealing with dental school are
also presented. |
|
Molecular Cell Biology - This course is
offered during the 1st semester of year one in the D.D.S.
curriculum. This course introduces the dental student to the basic
concepts of cellular and molecular biology. The course examines how
cellular activity is regulated, how cells are structured, and how cells
achieve homeostasis and interact with each other in multicellular
systems. It is structured to develop critical thinking skills as
well as other knowledge acquisition. |
|
Orofacial Biology I - This course is
offered during the 1st semester of year one in the D.D.S.
curriculum. This course presents growth, development, anatomy, and
histology of the human head and neck. Information is related to
dental treatment procedures and to clinical cases involving the
craniofacial complex. |
|
Systems Approach to Biomedical Sciences I
- This course is offered during the 2nd semester of year one in the
D.D.S. curriculum. This Part I course presents basic science
information organized into specific organ systems. Part I of this
course presents the first six modules: Immune Responses/Neoplasia,
Endocrinology, Nerve/Neuromuscular, Cardiovascular, Respiratory,
Gastrointestinal. Each module is organized to discuss the
development, structure, function, pathology, and therapy for each organ
system. Critical thinking skills are emphasized. |
|
Orofacial Biology II - This course is
offered during the 2nd semester of year one in the D.D.S.
curriculum. This course presents basic biological and physiological
processes normally occurring in the human mouth. It includes various
aspects of the periodontium, tooth structure, dental plaque, and the
normal oral microbiota, nutrition, and approaches to the prevention of
oral diseases. It also includes the basics of disease prevention and
infection control. |
|
Systems Approach to Biomedical Sciences II
- This course is offered during the 1st semester of year two in the
D.D.S. curriculum. This Part II course presents basic science
information organized into specific organ systems. Part II presents
the remaining modules: Hematology, Dermatology, Genitourinary,
Musculoskeletal. Each module is organized to discuss the
development, structure, function, pathology, and therapy for each organ
system. Critical thinking skills are
emphasized. |

Allied Dental Programs - The Oral
Biology faculty are responsible for several courses offered in the Allied
Dental Program. A description of the courses are
listed below. |
|
Chemistry and Nutrition - This course
is offered during the 1st year, 1st semester of the dental hygiene
program. Specific ideas in chemistry are correlated with working
principles in dentistry. |
