ANSWERS

The Basics

Where is the library? The library is located on the first floor of the School of Dentistry building - room 128. The campus address is DS 128.  

What are the library's hours?   Unless otherwise posted (see Special Hours), the library's operating hours are as follows:

Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Friday 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. 
Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Sunday 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. 

Is the library open to the public? Yes. The library is open to the public during posted hours.    

Who can borrow library materials?  Anyone with a valid borrower's card from an Indiana University Library. Indiana residents are eligible to apply for a borrower's card.  

Who can assist me in using the library?  Library staff is available to assist you during daytime hours and student assistants will help answer your questions in the evenings and on weekends. 

How can I find out what the library owns?  Consult IUCAT - Indiana University's system-wide online catalog. IUCAT is accessible on all library computers and remotely via the Internet.

How can I get a book or journal article that the library does not own? School of Dentistry faculty, staff and students may place an order for those materials through ILLiad - Interlibrary loan system

What do I do if can't locate an item that should be available? Please ask for assistance.  

How can I contact the library or staff? Contact the library by telephone at (317) 274-5204, by fax at (317) 278-1256, or by email at ds-libry@iupui.edu .  See the Staff page of this site for further contact information. The library's mailing address is: IUSD Library, 1121 West Michigan St, Indianapolis IN 46202 and campus address is DS 128. 

Where are the closest restrooms? Public restrooms are located off the main lobby along the hallway leading to the school's west entrance.  

Does the library have a "lost and found" area? Yes. The library has a small, short-term, "lost and found" area behind the Circulation Desk. Some items, including valuables, are taken directly to the school's "lost and found" area - in B-22. The telephone number for that office is: (317) 274-7536. 

Can the school's paging system be heard in the library? Announcements made over the school's paging system cannot be heard in the library. 

How can I get a message to someone who is using the library? Place a telephone call to the library's main line: (317) 274-7204. A staff member will relay the message to a library patron.   

How do I recommend a book for library purchase? Please submit recommendations for library purchases via email to ds-libry@iupui.edu and include your name and contact information.

Computers

Computer Workstations

Where are the library's computers? The library's computer workstations are located in the library's main reading room and basement level.

Laptops

Does the library have laptop hookups? Yes. The library's main reading room and Quiet Room have connections for laptop use. 

Does the library have wireless laptop functionality? Yes. Special software is required. Please contact the Computer Center in DS 120 for more information.

Email & Software

Where can I check my email account or do word processing? The workstations in the school's Computer Lab are equipped for word processing, email correspondence and Internet access. A network ID and password are required. The Computer Lab is located in DS 122 - a room accessible from the library's main reading room.

Equipment

Printers

Is there a printer in the library? Yes. All of the library's computer workstations are connected to one printer at the front of the main reading room. 

Where do I pick up documents I print from my laptop? Print jobs from laptops are directed to the printer in the Computer Lab.

Photocopiers

Does the library have photocopiers? Yes. Two copiers are located in the school's Computer Lab - a room accessible from the library's main reading room. One of the photocopiers accepts cash. 

How much do photocopies cost and how do I pay for them? Copies are $.10 per page when cash is used and $.07 per page when a copy card or IUPUI One Card is used for payment. 

Where can I get help with using the photocopier? Please direct photocopier related questions and concerns to library staff members. 

Who is responsible for loading toner and paper into the photocopiers? The library staff is responsible for loading paper and reporting toner outages.   

How can I put more money on my JagTag? A machine for this purpose is located in the hallway near room B-22.   

How can I get a JagTag or a replacement? Please contact JagTag Services' main office in room 115 of the Union Building, 275-5177. The department's web address is: http://www.JagTag.iupui.edu.

Audiovisual

Is there equipment in the library for me to use AV materials? Yes. Videocassette and audiocassette players, microfilm and microfiche readers and a caramate slide viewer may be used in the library by patrons.   

Does the library have light boxes for viewing slides? Yes. The library's light boxes are part of the Reserve collection. Please inquire at the Circulation Desk.

Does the library have a typewriter patrons can use? Yes. Please ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk.

Where is the closest telephone I can use?  A courtesy phone (local calls only) is available in the school's lobby area. There is also a pay telephone in the hallway leading to the west side entrance of the school building.

Collection

IUCAT

What is IUCAT?  IUCAT is a searchable database containing records for more than 5 million items held by the Indiana University Libraries statewide. Searches can be limited to a single location - such as the School of Dentistry Library. 

What is "My Account"? This feature enables IU faculty, staff and students to see a list of materials they have checked out and to request renewals. A user is prompted to enter his/her university ID and password after clicking on the "My Account" icon.

Where can I access IUCAT in the library? All of the library's computer workstations link to IUCAT. Patrons using the workstations in the computer lab as well as patrons with laptop computers may access IUCAT from the library's website. 

Can I search IUCAT from home? Yes. IUCAT is accessible through the library's web site. Click on IUCAT hotlinks to connect.

How can I learn to use IUCAT? There are several options: ask library staff members for assistance, consult "QuickStart" handouts available at all computer workstations in the library; follow the online IUCAT tutorial; consult the "Tips" on the lower half of IUCAT search screens; and use the Help option on IUCAT. 

What does  "Bindery" mean in IUCAT? "Bindery" indicates that the journal issue or issues are being bound together to create a single volume. The materials are away from the building and not accessible at this time. An Interlibrary Loan request may be placed for articles in journals at the bindery.  

What does "In process" mean in IUCAT?  "In process" indicates that the item has been received by the library and being prepared for circulation.   

What does "On order" mean in IUCAT?  "On order" means that the library has placed an order to purchase the item, but it is has not been received. 

What does "Stacks" mean in IUCAT?  The word "Stacks" is used to indicate that the title is shelved on the main floor of the library.

What does "Reserves" mean in IUCAT?  "Reserves" item is shelved behind the Circulation Desk and remains in the library at all times.

What does "Rare books" mean in IUCAT?  A title with this location is shelved in one of the library's rare book cases. Please ask for assistance. Rare books are consulted in the library and do not circulate.

What does "Reference" mean in IUCAT?  "Reference" indicates that the book shelved in the library's Reference section (near the entrance). These materials  are consulted in the library and do not circulate. 

What does "Theses" mean in IUCAT? The item is a thesis written by an Indiana University School of Dentistry student and shelved in the lower level of the library. Theses are arranged alphabetically by author.

What does it mean when the due date for a journal issue/volume is NEVER? It means that preparations are under way for the issue/volume to be sent to the bindery. These materials may still be accessible. Please ask for assistance. 

Will IUCAT tell me where a book is shelved? Yes. Note the title's "call number" on the IUCAT record - which is a  letter sequence followed by numbers and a date. The call number determines the title's shelf location.  

Will IUCAT tell me where a journal is shelved? Yes. The journal title's record in IUCAT include its shelving location. Note the portion of the record where "SEC" or "BAS" appear and is followed by a number. "SEC" means that the journal is shelved on the library's main floor and "BAS" indicates that the journal is shelved on the lower level of the library. Shelves in both areas are numbered and all journals are shelved alphabetically.

Electronic Resources

How do I search the dental literature electronically? The Medline database includes coverage of the dental literature. Searches in the Medline database can be limited to the dental literature or subset. This option is available in the Ovid, EBSCOhost and PubMed versions of Medline.   

Does the library have access to full-text journal articles? Yes. The library provides access to databases containing links to full-text articles. See also individual journal titles for links to full-text articles. IUCAT records also contain links to full-text materials.

Does the library have access to full-text textbooks? Yes. Please see the Electronic Textbook and Electronic Reference pages on this website for details. 

Does the library have access to full-text pharmaceutical information? Yes. Please see the  Electronic Textbook and Electronic Reference pages on this website for detail

Can I download or email search results from the library's computer workstations? Yes. Several of the databases accessible from these workstations, including Medline and IUCAT, offer an option to save or email search results. 

Can I access electronic resources outside of the library? Yes. Most of the library's electronic resources are accessible to IUPUI students, faculty and staff when they connect through the IUPUI campus computer network or have an authorized IUPUI NT domain ID and password. Why can't I access some of the electronic journals that my colleagues can at the IU Bloomington campus?  Licensing agreements control access to electronic resources. These agreements may restrict access to a particular geographical area such as the IUPUI or Bloomington campus.

Books

Where are the library's books located?  All of the library's books can be found on the main floor. Shelving areas for books include the Reference area, the Reserve area, the Stacks and the Rare Books case.

Journals

Where are the library's journals located?  Journals are shelved in two locations - on the library's main floor and the lower level.  

Are current journal issues shelved separately? No. All current and bound volumes (back issues) of a journal title are shelved together. 

Are there electronic resources for finding journal abbreviations? check the Journals database in PubMed. The link is found on the left side of the page under the PubMed Services heading. 

Are there print resources for finding journal abbreviations? Yes. One option is to consult the "Abbreviations Listing" section of the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus - shelved in the Reference Section of the library with a call number of REF ZW 1 L772 (year). There is also a journal abbreviations guide in each volume of the Index to Dental Literature.  A three volume set, titled Periodical Title Abbreviations, is shelved in the Reference section with a call number of Z 6945 .A2 W34 1994.

Other publications

Where is the library's thesis collection?  Theses authored by Indiana University School of Dentistry students are shelved in the library's lower level and arranged alphabetically by author. 

Does the library subscribe to any newspapers? Yes. The library subscribes to the Indianapolis Star as well as The Wall Street Journal. The newspaper rack is located above the dictionary stand in the main section of the library.

How do faculty members arrange for materials to be placed on Reserve? Request a form from a staff member at the Circulation Desk or complete and submit an electronic Reserve Materials Request form.

Circulation

Borrower's cards

Where do I get a library card? Come to the Circulation Desk weekdays during the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please call or email the library if you would like an application sent to you. 

Who can get a library card? Indiana University faculty, staff and students are automatically eligible to borrow library materials through use of their ID card. Indiana residents may apply for a library card from any Indiana University library. Special library cards are issued by this library to School of Dentistry faculty, staff and students. Borrowing privileges vary (see below). 

Can I use my IUPUI JagTag to borrow materials? School of Dentistry faculty, staff and students are encouraged not use their JagTag to borrow materials from this library. All other Indiana University personnel may use their JagTags to borrow materials. IUSD Library journals and theses cannot be checked out with a JagTag. Special red-and-white borrowers cards are issued to IUSD faculty, staff and students that allow them to borrow these and other materials.

Can School of Dentistry faculty, staff and students have their IUSD Library card transferred onto their JagTag? No. Special Indiana University School of Dentistry Library borrowing privileges are allowed via a separate library card issued by this library. 

Can I use my IUSD library card at other campus libraries? Please restrict the use of your red-and-white IUSD library card to this library. Your campus ID card or JagTag serves as your borrower's card at other Indiana University libraries. 

What can I borrow with my library card?  School of Dentistry faculty, staff and students may borrow books and media from the stacks, journals (except second copies), theses and Reserve materials. All other patrons may borrow books and media from the stacks as well as Reserve materials.

Policies and Procedures

Do I always need to present my library card when I borrow materials? Yes. You will need to have your library card with you in order to check out materials. 

How long may I borrow books from the stacks? Books from the stacks may be borrowed for 14 days at a time. Books on Reserve may be borrowed for two hours.  

Can journals be borrowed and for how long? Journals may be borrowed by School of Dentistry faculty, staff and students. Journals may be borrowed for three days at a time. 

Are there any journals that do not circulate? Yes. Duplicate volumes (labeled as "cop.2") do not circulate. 

Can I retrieve a journal that is at the bindery? No. Journal issues that are sent to the bindery are unavailable for approximately three weeks. A "hold" may be placed on a volume currently at the bindery. You may also place an Interlibrary Loan order for materials at the bindery. Request forms are available in the library and electronically.  

Can I borrow Reference books? Reference books must be consulted in the library.

How long may I borrow audiovisual materials? Audiovisual materials from the stacks may be borrowed for 14 days at a time. Audiovisual materials on Reserve may be borrowed for two hours.  

How long may I borrow Reserve materials?  Reserve materials may be borrowed for two hours.  

Can I take Reserve materials out of the library? No. Reserve materials must stay in the library at all times. 

How do I know if a title is checked out? Search IUCAT for the title you seek. Once you locate the database record for the title, you can determine its circulation status. If it is not available, the location will read "checked out" with a due date. You may wish to consider requesting a "hold" for the title (see next question). 

What can I do if a title I want is checked out? Go to the circulation desk and request a "hold" for this title. Your library card is required for this transaction. You will be notified when the material becomes available.  

Who can borrow an IUSD thesis and for how long? Theses written by Indiana University School of Dentistry students may be borrowed by IUSD faculty, staff and students for 14 days at a time.

Can I borrow items from the Rare Books and Archives collections? Items from the Rare Books cases and Archives must be consulted in the library. These items cannot be checked out. Please request assistance.

Do you charge fines for overdue materials? This library does not charge fines for overdue materials.  

Do I need to present a library card when I return materials? No. A library card is needed only for borrowing materials.

Renewals

 Can I renew items I have checked out? Renewals are permitted when no "holds" are placed on the title.  

May I renew Reserve items? Reserve materials may not be renewed. 

How many times can I renew materials? Patrons may renew books, audiovisual materials, and theses twice. Journals may not be renewed. Items for which a hold has been placed cannot be renewed.  

How do I request a renewal? You have three options: 1. Come to the library's circulation desk; 2. Call the library's main line - 274-7204; 3. Do it yourself via the "My Account" feature in IUCAT. You will be prompted to enter your network ID and password to access your account. Note: You will see listings for materials borrowed with your IUSD (red and white) library borrower's card separately from materials borrowed with your JagTag.

Holds

Can I reserve material that is currently being borrowed? Yes. Please ask a library staff member to place a "hold" on the material for you. You will need to present your library card for this transaction. You will be contacted when the material becomes available.

Can I place a hold on Reserve materials? Holds cannot be placed on materials in the Reserve collection.

Notices

Will I be notified when an item I borrowed is overdue?  Notices of overdue materials are distributed via email, campus or U.S. mail.  

Why would I receive a bill from the library? Library patrons are billed after they have received three notices regarding an overdue item. At this point, the item is considered "not returned" and subject to replacement cost and processing fee charges. Billing transactions for faculty, staff and students are handled through the IUPUI Bursar's Office. Persons not affiliated with the university will be billed through the IUPUI Accounting department.

Library Services

How do I request an Interlibrary Loan? Complete an electronic or paper form.   

How do I know when my  Interlibrary Loan request has arrived? You will be contacted by email or telephone.  

Is there a limit on the number of items I can borrow through Interlibrary Loan? No, the library does not limit the number of requests a patron may place. However, the quantity of materials the library obtains is subject to copyright restrictions.  

Where do I pick up materials I borrow through Interlibrary Loan? Items obtained through Interlibrary Loan are available at the Circulation Desk.  

Do I need to show my library card when I pick up a book or article I ordered through Interlibrary Loan? No, you do not need your library card to check out these materials.  

How long can I keep books I borrow through Interlibrary Loan? Loan periods vary. Return the book by the date indicated on the white paper wrapper. Please do not remove this covering.   

Do I have to return articles I obtain through Interlibrary Loan? No. Those articles are yours to keep.  

Does the library offer a Literature Search service? Yes. Forms are available in paper and electronic format.
