This
course is a core course taken by all graduate students regardless of specialty.
It is an overview of the tissue and cells of the periodontium, extra cellular
matrix regulatory molecules and transmembrane signaling. It also covers the
composition of oral hard structures and the role of saliva in health and
disease, the general characteristics and causative agents of the major
infectious diseases important in dentistry and the basics of the immune
response. Also covered is how disease agents may be spread in the dental office
and how to prevent this spread as well as the basics of prevention of oral
diseases and the role of nutrition in health and disease.
G948 Advanced Radiology - 2.0 Credit hours - Dr. Ted Parks, Director
This
course is a core course taken by all graduate students regardless of specialty.
It introduces the students to the basic principles of imaging techniques
including image intensification, extra oral plain film imaging (panoramic,
tomographic, etc.) digital imaging using charged-coupled devices (solid state
detectors) and imaging (MRI). The application of these modalities to
maxillofacial problems such as pre-surgical implant assessment and evaluation of
the temporomandibular joint is also taught.
R949 Advanced Head & Neck Anatomy - 2.0 Credit hours - Dr. William Babler,
Director
This
course is an intense review of head and neck anatomy by laboratory dissection
over a two week period with five half day laboratory sessions per week. Each
team of four graduate students dissects one half of a cadaver head.
G966 Advanced Clinical Periodontics - 2.0 Credit hours - Dr. Steven
Blanchard, Director,
Patients are assigned and initial examination performed.
First Year Fall Semester:
R962 Advanced Periodontics Treatment Planning Seminar - 2.0 Credit hour
- Dr.
Steven Blanchard, Director
This
seminar is designed to examine and improve treatment planning skills for complex
periodontal scenarios. The course focuses on utilizing available information
about a particular clinical case to determine appropriate treatment as well as
possible treatment alternatives. The seminar is led by assigned graduate
periodontics students and moderated by various periodontal faculty members.
Students are encouraged to present complex or interesting cases encountered
during clinical sessions. Discussions will focus on an analysis of patient and
etiologic factors to make a proper diagnosis and determine the appropriate
treatment. The presenting student will be prepared to include a brief review of
the literature regarding the particular case in terms of various treatment
options. After a discussion to develop various treatment possibilities, the
student will present any completed treatment for the particular case that will a
focus on flap design, tissue manipulation, placement or use of various
periodontal materials, flap closure, and healing responses. Concluding
discussions will center around any revisions to the completed treatment which
might help improve future clinical outcomes.
R961 Recent Advances in Periodontics Seminar - 2.0 Credit hour
- Dr. Jin Kim,
Director
This
course will be of a seminar nature and is designed to augment the Classical
Literature Seminar course currently being taught. The course will focus on the
current periodontal and implant literature published within the previous 12
months. The seminar will be led by selected graduate periodontics students and
moderated by various periodontal faculty members. The articles to be discussed
during the seminar will be selected by the student discussion leaders from
various periodontal and implantology journals and submitted to the faculty
moderator for approval. All periodontics graduate students will be required to
read each of the selected articles and be prepared to discuss each article in
detail during the seminar. Students will be expected to refer to any previously
published articles that may be referenced in a particular selected article as
necessary in order to critically analyze and discuss the selected paper.
Students will be expected to compare/contrast the articles to be discussed with
papers that have been discussed from earlier seminars. This course will allow
students to incorporate current concepts and recent advances in periodontics and
implant dentistry into clinical practice.
G907 Clinical Oral Pathology Conference - 1.0 Credit hour - Dr. Mohammed
Islam, Director
This is a

This
seminar reviews the classic periodontal literature by topics and the course is
made up of first year graduate periodontic students only. Each student is
required to abstract the list of articles for each weekly seminar and turn them
in to the course director for grade. During the seminar each article is
reviewed by a graduate student and discussed by the entire class with
supervision by the course director.
G928 Research Periodontics - 1.0 Credit hour - Dr. Michael Kowolik,
Director
This
course has four two hour weekly sessions conducted by Dr. Kowolik where he
introduces the students to the scientific principles of designing a research
project, writing a protocol, obtaining and analyzing data and writing the
results. The introduction to Research Ethics, provided by him in R955, is
extended with a more detailed discussion of IRB submission. Each student is
required to take the on-line tutorial and pass the IU Human Subjects Research
Protection Test by the end of the semester. The principle educational component
is centered on individual student protocol presentations within the group. The
remainder of the course is informal with the students choosing a research
project for their MSD Thesis, choosing their committee and beginning the writing
of the protocol.

non-surgical therapy. After completing a half day Basic Periodontal Surgery
laboratory session and a half day Advanced Periodontal Surgery Laboratory
session using pig jaws to perform the surgical procedures, the students begin
performing surgery, as required, on their patients. The graduate clinic is open
