Tuition for Ph.D. Students
Students enrolled in the Ph.D. programs will be charged either the Indiana or
non-resident (determined by residency) per credit hour rate throughout the
entire course of study. Currently the credit hour rate is:
Indiana Resident: $242.40 per hour
Non-Resident: $712.75 per hour
English as a Second Language (ESL) Placement Test
All students for whom English is a second language are required to complete
the ESL Placement Test.
The scores you receive on the different parts of the placement test are used to
place you into, or exempt you from, IUPUI ESL classes. Enclosed is a brochure
describing the ESL Program. If you are placed into any IUPUI ESL classes, you
will be responsible for paying for these courses. These courses are currently
$242.40 (resident rate) and $712.75 (non-resident rate) per credit hour, which
means if you are placed in a 3 hour course, you would be charged $727.20 (resident) or $2,138.25 (non-resident). Some students have been required to complete as many
as 3 English courses. These courses must be completed before the Ph.D. degree
can be granted.
IUPUI SPEAK TEST
IUPUI has established the policy that all graduate students whose first
language is not English and who are being considered for graduate assistantships
must demonstrate adequate oral English proficiency before assignment to duties
involving direct interaction with students. All ITAs (International Teaching
Assistants) are required to have their oral proficiency certified with a SPEAK
test as a condition of receiving their ITA appointment. ITAs with primary
responsibility for teaching a class or laboratory section are required to have a
SPEAK score of > 50.
Students who have inadequate English communication skills will be required to
take the ITA training course (English G020) before being giving a position that
requires direct student contact. Students will be re-administered the SPEAK test
at the end of the G020 class, and will need to achieve an appropriate score to
be cleared to teach. If you are required to complete English G020, you will also
need to pay for this course. The cost for the course this year is $727.20
(resident) or $2,138.25 (non-resident).
