All newly admitted students must purchase all of the instruments required by the respective graduate program.

Once students have accumulated the number of credit hours required by a particular graduate program, they must enroll for a minimum of 1 hour or graduate credit each semester until the degree is completed.

The cost of tuition, fees, and instruments will increase next year; however, the increase is unknown at this time.  Recently, the increases have been approximately 6-10% each year.

Estimated living expenses for 12 months: $13,200.  This includes rent, food, clothing, transportation and health insurance.

Dependents:  A married student must add US $7,000 for the expenses of the first dependent (spouse or child) and US $4,500 for subsequent dependents to meet basic needs for rent, food, clothing and health insurance.

ESL FEES

All students for whom English is a second language are required to complete the English as a Second Language (ESL) Placement Test.  The fee for the ESL Placement Test is $25.00.

The scores you received on the different parts of the placement test are used to place you into, or exempt you from, IUPUI ESL classes.  If you are placed into any IUPUI ESL classes, you will be responsible for paying for these courses.  These courses are currently $712.75 per credit hour, which means if you are placed in one 3 hour course, you would be charged $2,138.25.  Some students have been required to complete as many as 3 English courses between 9-10 credit hours.  These courses must be completed before a degree (i.e., M.S.D.) or certificate can be granted.

IUPUI has also established the policy that all graduate students whose first language is not English, and are being considered for graduate assistantships, must demonstrate adequate oral English proficiency before assignment to duties involving direct interaction with students.  All ITAs (International Teaching Assistants) are required to have their oral proficiency certified with a SPEAK test as a condition of receiving their ITA appointment.  ITAs with primary responsibility for teaching a class or laboratory section are required to have a SPEAK score of 50 or greater.

Students who have inadequate English communication skills will be required to take the ITA training course (English G020) before being given a position that requires direct student contact.  Students will be re-administered the SPEAK test at the end of the G020 class, and will need to achieve an appropriate score to be cleared to teach.  If you are required to complete English G020, you will also be responsible for paying for this course.  The current cost for this course is $712.75 per credit hour or $2,138.25.
