Institutional Competencies
For the Dental Graduate*

INTRODUCTION:

The Competencies for the Dental Graduate are part of a triad of guidelines that, along with the IUSD Standards of Care and a sound Quality Assurance Program create a framework that fosters development of competent beginning practitioners of Dentistry. The standards describe the proper care for the patient, the competencies establish those skills expected of our graduates, and the quality assurance program provides the mechanism that assures that the standards are met. The Competencies combine measurement of the application of biomedical sciences knowledge with the technical skills required to provide individual patient care up to Standards expectations.

1. Graduates must be competent in patient assessment and diagnosis for the child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient, and special needs patient.

2. Graduates must be competent in treatment planning and case presentation for the child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.

3. Graduates must be competent to communicate and collaborate with groups and individuals to promote oral and general health and; select strategies, resources and interventions appropriate for the prevention of oral disease in the community.

4. Graduates must be competent in control of pain and anxiety, clinical pharmacology, and management of related problems.

5. Graduates must be competent in the prevention and management of dental and medical emergencies.

6. Graduates must be competent in the restoration of defective and/or missing teeth to form, function and esthetics in the child patient.

7. Graduates must be competent in the diagnosis and restoration of defective teeth to form, function and esthetics in the adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.

8. Graduates must be competent in the fixed replacement of missing teeth to form, function and esthetics in the uncomplicated adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.

9. Graduates must be competent in treating uncomplicated partially edentulous patients with removable partial dentures to restore and maintain oral function, health, comfort and appearance.

10. Graduates must be competent in treating uncomplicated edentulous patients with complete dentures to restore and maintain oral function, health, comfort and appearance.

11. Graduates must be competent in the diagnosis and management of periodontal disorders.

12. Graduates must be competent in the prevention, diagnosis and management of pulpal and periradicular diseases.

13. Graduates must be competent in the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal disorders.

14. Graduates must be competent to collect and assess diagnostic information to plan for and perform uncomplicated oral surgical procedures.

15. Graduates must be competent to recognize malocclusion in the primary, mixed and permanent dentition and to identify from an acceptable problem list an uncomplicated case with limited developmental/acquired abnormality.

16. Graduates must be competent in describing the indications, contraindications, advantages and disadvantages of space maintainers, and demonstrating the basic skills in making simple orthodontics appliances and space maintainers.

17. Graduates must be competent in discerning and managing ethical issues and problems in dental practice.

18. Graduates must be competent in the understanding and application of the appropriate codes, rules, laws and regulations that govern dental practice.

19. Graduates must be competent in behavioral patient management and interpersonal skills.

20. Graduates must be competent in understanding the fundamental elements of managing a dental practice.

21. Graduates must be competent in performing and supervising infection control procedures to prevent transmission of infectious diseases to patients, the dentist, the staff and dental laboratory technicians.

22. Graduates must be competent to critically evaluate and incorporate new dental procedures/therapies into their practices when these procedures/therapies have proven scientifically efficacious.

23. Graduates must have the ability to recognize the role of lifelong learning and self-assessment to maintain competency.

24. Graduates must be competent in the use of information technology resources.

25. Graduates must be competent in detection, diagnosis, risk assessment, prevention, and management of dental caries.
