DISTANCE-LEARNING PROGRAM
Indiana University School of Dentistry Distance-learning Dental
Assisting Program was established to appeal to candidates living in rural areas
where access to traditional courses is difficult. The distance-learning
program can also be a good choice for students who must juggle an education with
job and family responsibilities. This fully ADA
accredited distance-learning program is the first in Indiana and one of
only 10 programs from a total of 269 ADA accredited in
the U. S. doing some form of distance-learning. It has been
approved by the Indiana Commission on Higher Education.
The first class, which began in August 2007, was
limited to 13 students. The distance-learning program is two semesters in
length-fall and spring. The program uses IU's online course management
system to teach non-clinical subjects and to maintain a running dialogue with
students, who must also spend at least one Saturday a month on site at
the dental school to complete laboratory assignments and take exams.
Clinical training will be provided by sponsoring general dentists of the
students' choice

CAMPUS PROGRAM
Our dental assisting program on the IUPUI campus is in a unique educational
location. We are one of only three programs in the U.S. to be housed within a
dental school. Our students take all of their didactic, laboratory, and clinical
classes in Indiana University School of Dentistry, which is the only dental
school in Indiana. In this facility, hundreds of students are pursuing degrees
and certificates in a wide variety of dental fields. Working side by side with
students who are learning to become dentists, dental assisting students help
provide treatment to the IU dental school's patients, and there are many other
opportunities for students from different programs to collaborate. Enrolling in
a dental assisting program at a dental school significantly multiplies the
opportunities for learning, both in and out of the classroom.
The dental assisting program's faculty members are
experienced and dedicated dental professionals who are well known in the
profession internationally, nationally and locally. Our commitment to teaching
excellence ensures a comprehensive education for the next generation of dental
assistants and enables us to provide the community with competent, caring
healthcare providers.
We prepare our students for job interviews and plan
opportunities for them to have contact with potential employers. It is common
for some of our students to be offered jobs even before they have graduated -
often from dental faculty members or soon-to-graduate dental students.
Please note, students in the campus program need to
plan on being in either a class or a clinic Monday through Friday 8:00am to
5:00pm. Classes are scheduled in Onestart by the lecture component only.
Laboratory classes are scheduled by the dental assisting program and will not
show up on the schedule you receive from Onestart. Official class
schedules will be distributed to students during the IUSD Dental Assisting
Orientation.
Students must have dependable transportation (eg:
personal vehicle, access to city bus service) to ensure ability to attend off
campus clinical rotations.
