Dental Assisting Admissions

Admissions Requirements for Campus Program

The Dental Assisting program is a professional program of 31 college credit hours. Graduates may apply to an optional baccalaureate degree in Individualized Major Program or General Studies, if desired. Program curriculum is on website for your reference.

Admission to the Dental Assisting Program is limited to students selected by the Dental Assisting Admissions Committee. One class is admitted each year to begin classes in the fall.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

1.  All dental assisting applicants must be considered admissible to IUPUI and must file an undergraduate application through the IUPUI Office of Admissions. The Admissions Office must have official transcripts from high school and every school attended after high school graduation. This is a two step application process. *Note that acceptance letters from IUPUI may contain the following statement, "academic record at this time does not meet criteria for direct admission".  This statement is in reference to the specific Dental Assisting Program admission process as stated below needing to be fulfilled prior to a dental assisting admissions committee decision.

2.  Required courses completed with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 "C" on a 4.0 scale for science and English at high school or college level.

3.  Verification of keyboarding experience or computer skills.

4.  Submit an OFFICIAL high school transcript (9-12 grades) from all high schools attended of the academic work you have completed. If applicable, submit a copy of GED Certificate and Scores. If you are currently enrolled in your senior year of high school, transcript should include fall semester.

If you are currently enrolled or have attended a college, university, or vocational program, you must submit an OFFICIAL transcript from all schools attended; however, students attending any Indiana University Campus may submit an unofficial transcript.

FINAL OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS of all academic work completed must be received in the dental assisting office before FINAL ACCEPTANCE into the Dental Assisting Program.

5.  All applicants must observe a dental assistant in a dental office for a minimum of 8 hours. The IUSD Dental Assisting Verification of Dental Office Observation Form is to be signed by the dentist and submitted to the dental assisting program by June 1.

6.  If an individual has English as a second or another language, the applicant will need to take the IUPUI ESL (English as a second language) placement. These results will be used as part of the Committee's admissions review. The Committee may require an interview or writing exercise to determine the applicant's English skills.

Send completed application (attached photo optional), observation form and all official transcripts to:

Students are required to have Class C CPR (Health Care Provider or Professional Rescuer) certification.  A CPR session is provided by the school free of charge to accepted student during the summer prior to beginning of classes.  If a student is unable to attend this CPR session given by the school, the student is responsible for obtaining the proper certification prior to the beginning of classes.

Computer Access

Dental Assisting students need to be sure that computers used are compatible with IU School of Dentistry technology.  Windows XP is required.  The new Vista system is not compatible.

Students will need to have access to a computer (home, school, or library) to be able to participate in certain portions of the course work.  Laptop computers are available at a good discount for dental assisting students through the IUSD Technology Department. A laptop is not required for dental assisting students but having one available can facilitate your access to the Internet for research projects, and print jobs in our Library when Library computers are occupied. Nadine Florek is our Computer Technology contact person if you are interested in this laptop offer. Nadine's contact information: nflorek@iupui.edu.
